I found two interesting articles in a local newspaper (Stavanger Aftenblad) when I was home this christmas. The first article shows the amount of "lost" protected nature in Rogaland county. The untouched nature is being swallowed by urban development, infrastructure and excessive farming. We can also see from the map that the area along the coast called Jæren has little protected nature, about 1 % of the total area. This is mainly because it's more economical to use the land for farming, than protect it (according to the second article).
A quote from the second article (by Harald Birkevold):
"80% of the endangered species in Rogaland are threatened by area changes. These changes threatens the ecosystems, and the biggest threat in the Jæren region is agriculture. Big areas are being fertelized every year, and this ruins the diversity of plants, insects, birds and animals. The result is big areas that are dominated only by a few gras species.35% of all endangered species in Norway is connected to the cultural landscape, a landscape which is threatened by regrowth, recultivation, drainage and fertilization."
