This project investigates our relationship to the sea. The field of study, Jæren, situated on the coast of Norway is part of the North Sea ecosystem. The project reveales the north sea as one territory, looking at what is influencing this huge ecosystem and what will be the future challenges for the communities residing in this drainage bassin. The project suggests a number of strategies for the North Sea, which all the countries, commnities, will be affected by and have strategies that relate to. Jæren, the municipality of Norways oil capital Stavanger, play an interesting role in this seascape.

The project focuses on man made interventions. The historical research and the reference used to predict future scenarios are all human interventions. The project investigates if it is possible to design not only for people but also the ecosystem and if there exists solutions that benefit both. It is optimistic in the way that it still sees potential in man to continue to form it’s landscape. The scenarios sketched out with the archipelago is intended to illustrate what kind of concequences this kind of thinking could have, but also to problematize this kind of interventions. The question remains open: how will we interfer in the sea in the years to come?

# An article about climate changes in Jaeren, its affect on agriculture (thanks to Anders):

Global warming could have major negative consequences for agriculture and food production. But in Norway and other parts of the northern areas will increase temperatures to extend the growing season could provide greater yields and potential for growing crops that are only harvested at other latitudes. In the five-year project Windsur (Winter survival) has Bioforsk West on Særheim in Klepp, in cooperation with departments on Bioforsk Fureneset in Fjaler and Holt in Tromsø seen in a long telescope. Project Mats Höglind by Bioforsk West on Særheim admits that he has gotten a bit aha experience while working. - This will increase the temperature, the more I have dealt me a long time. But it is only when I sat down and considered what it means for plant growth that I understand what is happening with the climate, "says Mats Höglind.

Climate Scenarios

Höglind and his colleagues have worked with both model and practical experiments. They have been based on geographical downscaled climate scenarios from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute. These are based again on the temperature scenarios from the IPCC. The researchers used data from the period 1971-1990 as the reference and directed his gaze to the period 2071-2100. They have assumed that the average temperature of Jæren then up to three degrees higher. 315 days

Here are some of the key projections:

The climate in Jæren will look like much on the current conditions along the coast of Belgium today, but be wetter. The growing season in the Sun is increased to 315 days, compared with 234 days on average in 1961-1990. In comparison, the growing season in the Netherlands over the past 15 years has been 290 days on average.

The increase in the fall can be up to four degrees, compared with 1971-1990.

First Revolt in Jæren can start in early May. One to two additional tunes and / or such extended grazing season.

Annual precipitation will increase noticeably. Again, the trick will be greatest in the autumn, with up to 50 millimeters more rain per month.

550 ppm CO2 in the air (to 384 ppm today) leads to increased plant growth, but the impact is unlikely to exceed 10 percent under Norwegian conditions.

Decreased risk of frost damage and ice damage in the fall / winter. Increased risk of frost damage after growth starts.

Mats Höglind emphasizes that there is considerable uncertainty about how much climate will vary within short periods of time and where extreme fluctuations. This will be important for the opportunities an extended growing season actually provide for increased harvest and larger crops.

Even more autumn rainfall can offer great challenges for many cultures.

The natural diversity is made up of all the world's life forms and their habitats. This includes biological processes and ecological functions at different levels. Many species and habitats is now in danger of disappearing forever. Physical interventions and changes in land use is considered the main couse. The tendency is desired areas drained and filled, mono-cultured for a better and faster crops to be developed. It allows the bird's natural areas to shrink and changes to quikley for them to be able to adapt.
Some species related to cultivated agriculture return because of changing in farming and a more intensive farming. Suggested at the wrong time is an example. Modern forestry with the removal of old dead trees, and this is negative for some forest living birds, like woodpeckers. Birds can adapt to new areas, but the story in the agricultural landscape shows that the breeding success goes down, the species will be fewer and the number of birds will be less.

Norway has committed itself to halt the loss of biological diversety by 2010. Maby Jæren can be the first step in this direction.

A present at the opening of the studio exhibition

When I am in Oslo I have found some pleasure being present at OAF meetings debating with the different lecturers coming in from all over the world. The latest occation brought me into a dialogue with the architect and professor Markus Schaefer of Hosoya Schaefer Architects in Zürich. The topics was on the aspects of masterplanning in cities under the impact of financial brakedown, and what informed the firms projects. A really interesting discussion that continued after the meeting and into the night. Markus Schaefer started out his education in biology, then in architecture and finished his master under Rem Koolhaas at Harvard, worked at OMA and was for some time the Director of AMO.
He has just sent me an interview which I find very interesting. Here he comments on studio works, as we have been through in this semester. This interview is then the gift to you.

The tendency in urban planning is that each municipality forget to focus on whats on the other side of their municipality borders.
This means that every place have many of the same functions and a lack of identity. Each municipality look to its neighbour wanting what they dont have. This might strengthen the political borders and the collaboration between the borders will be weaker.

By making the essence and identity of each municipality stronger and link them along the railway to transport goods and people, both internationally and regionally.

Then introduce a new infrastructural network and compress the time between Sandnes and Egersund, a new way of living will evolve and generate a more sustainable future.

In order to improve the striated landscape of Kviamarka, and develop its possibilities, I want to start a transformation of the weaknesses into strenghts.

By utilizing the existing knowledge, Kviamarka can be developed in a more sustainable way, with a production adapted to the natural qualities in the landscape, with a variety of scale and use.

The start of a future transformation is making new connections to the systems surrounding Kviamarka, and let them guide Kviamarka to new positions of production and habitats.

My strategy is to let the smooth space become a symbiotic part of the striated space.

Rough Version of Jaeren Mosaic

I use culture as a clue to explore the urbanization in Jaeren while injecting my discovery with the knowledge from interview and other source. The pdf is not the finished version. I will follow the line like this:
1. Culture and art as a metaphor ever appeared and disappeared in Jaeren's natural and social landscape.
2. Take Sandnes for example, the Silobygget intrigued huge discussion on whether this high-rise culture center will bring out Bilbao effect.Various debate can be reviewed concerning urban development. Silobygget is also a clue to look at all those proposed high-rise architecture projects in Jaeren(some are suspended, some are in construction, they all in some way appeared or disappeared on Jaeren's scenario map). From municipalities' enthusiasm for new high rise projects, can see a fierce competition is on air.
3. Bryne also took part in this battle with Bryne Forum. What kind of urban identity a traditional agriculture area is looking for? and during this process, a series of conflict between tradition and modernization shall be discussed also in terms of culture phenomenon.
4. As economic competition is going more and more strong, to attract young talents back is a key way to find possibility for future. The factors lure young talents back Jaeren is another consequent topic, which is not solely concerned on culture.
The words in the Jaeren mosaic is not the final version, also the images need editing. Infographics may need my oral explaination:) I hope they will raise wider discussion.

The development in the agricultural industry that has occurred in the past decades has brought a gap between producer and consumer, between farmer and public. A new design must restore this relationship. The public can be involved more directly in food production and the management of rural areas.
A farm that is not only an economic unity, but also a farm that is built on social pillars can be a solution. But first of all, reconciliation between public and the new trend on agriculture is beneficial. So I suggest a concept which combines public spaces with industrial farming.

I've started to analyse the site and design a complex of greenhouses within the area.

Now my secret gardent is shaped. And I am giving it 4 different biotopes (woods, marsh, meadow and brushwood) at greatest rapidity.

And I am making the sections, plan and the diagram show phases.

Last week, I went to a town named Fredrikstad for a break and breathed fresh air. Incidentally, there has a artificial channel. The shallows is paradise for the birds and the plant. What a beautiful scenery !

Compendium of little things - basic facts

This is the most important facts that I have used further in my project. Facts that are interesting and which might not have thought of before, are put together in a small compendium of little things. There is so much info about the birds that it quickly becomes difficult to zome out again. But the basis for my project will be the Red List of Rogaland.

Natural Type and bird life connection

One can see clearly that the species that have connection to the agricultural areas are those most threatened. It seems as if the birds that relate to two or more habitats are less affected than those that relate to a natural kind. One can see that almost half of the species living in connection with a maritime environment, sea, wetlands, etc..

Based on this analysis, I will say that the areas with the most threatened species are farm areas, the coast and then comes the forests and wetlands, followed by mountains. I believe that the change in the operation of farm areas that have the greatest impact on birds. An intensification of agriculture and drainage of wetlands is the biggest threat. This has an impact on breeding and food situation for the birds. What can you do to maintain a balance? Can the birds adapt to new areas? "Some species associated with cultural returns due to changing farming and intensive farming. Suggested at the wrong time is an example. Decreased or ceased grazing by livestock and overgrowth are other examples. Modern forestry with the removal of old and dead trees are negative for a number of forest living birds, like woodpeckers example ......" Norwegian Red List.

Birds can adapt to new areas, but the story in the agricultural landscape shows that nesting success is decreasing and the species will be fewer, the number of birds will be less. Some species will be able to adapt so well that they manage to maintain a population.

Mycelium as a catalyst for a rhizomatic development

I am following my own line of sight in Jæren, it has guided my project in a philosophical direction and my wish for a rhizomatic development in Jæren has become the root of thinking. I have not yet designed what Kviamarka, as a future epicenter of Jæren, will become - and I'm not sure if I will. Right now I am still drawing and thinking, and trying to create chapters of these thoughts.

Mycelium will be the catalyst for the rhizomatic future in Kviamarka. The physical consequence of this is a constant growth and collapse system, different spatial scales, and a revitalized holistic context. This will generate topsoil and vegetation, as well as clean pollutants and work as a natural pesticide.

My main focus is scale and context - generated by public awareness, ecological resilience and economic viability.

The Counterattack

I have been struggeling to find an approach to how Forus will appear in the future. Alice gave me some reference projects about shrinking cities as inspiration. While looking through them I realized my intentions of choosing Forus may been unclear to you.

I see the shrinking city phenomenon more as an backdrop for my project, and not as "the project". On the countrary, my project is about finding a strategy on how to counter this phenomenon, and using Forus as the testing site. The shrinking cities projects I have been looking into deals with revitalization and reprogramming of abandoned industrial areas, and not areas which at current state are productive. Therefore I feel another approach is needed.

I am still holding on to my cards and my networks of knowledge. In the transition from the fossil economy I have to define what kind of new input Forus needs, and if they can be connected to the already existing industry. The newcomers will be the fresh impulses and the current actors at Forus can become mentors. I found a interesting project by OMA adding various functions and public programs to a metro line. This can be tested out along the JærMetro track passing Forus.

The main challenge for me now is how to deal with the landscape in this situation. Input would have been nice.

The eyes are on the farmers these days and pressure boosted regarding climate discussion. Hå municipality has put their ambition high for their agricultural industry; feeding Norway, new energy solutions and improve industries, with the slogan „Handle lokalt thenke globalt“ in forefront.

The ambition with this project is to explore Jærens possibilities of renewable energy production. With research, and test site in Hå municipality the intention is to look deeper of how local production of energy could lead to new energy patterns in Jæren.

Now the research site is nearly landed - And just continious work untill the final hand inn - GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

11 am – 3 pm : you will be divided in two workshops

ON SUPERMAPS AND MATRIXES OF INFORMATION (AL + KED)
ON LANDSCAPE SYSTEMS AND STRUCTURES (GEIR + ANDERS)

the intent of the workshop is to define together a structure for finalizing your strategies into projects able to hit the right dynamics and open for your envisioned appearing landscapes in Jæren. That is to say, the workshop tries to group into a common discussion the singular communication and strategic challenges highlighted by your projects in midcrit. A list of the groups will be put out early tomorrow.

WHAT WE ASK YOU TO DO BY WEDNESDAY : to produce a key drawing for your project, able to explain its implications and complexities , to be simple the drawing that in your final presentation could be printed large in the middle and keep all the threads of your strategy together. Can be a supermap, a diagram, the key to your storyboard, a detailed section of your transformed fragment of Jæren landscape. From this drawing we will start building upon our discussion, and we will decide together an assignment running for the three days which will aim to refine this drawing until it becomes super-communicative (thus sharpening your strategy, and if not becoming a project in itself, setting the conditions for a project to start taking form from monday onwards)

So please come with your key drawing, any reference / unprocessed information you have found during easter, and – of course – a lot of energy !! :-D

thu and fri we will keep on working interchanging between individual tutorings and common discussions.

In search for a new post-oil landscape, we are turning to the sea-scape hoping that, within it’s infinity, we can find new ways of energy, new food production and even the cure for cancer. It is not the first time we seak the oceans for survival, we have been living with and of the sea since the beginning of times. How have we been doing this and what impact has this had? In charging the landscape with new energy I unfold my actors, looking historically on how they have been acting and how they have influenced each other. Without oil, Norway might not be in the position it is today, many claime we too would be harshly hit by the financial crisis. How was this possible and what happens when it disappears? We are in times of transition and looking historically at how we have been using our ressourses will open reflections on how we can use our ressourses in the future and how this new post-landscape may look like.

Horizontal landscape corridor

In Norway as a whole, the area of agricultural land in use is about 10 360 km2, or 3 percent of the total area of the country. In 2005/2006, the amounts of fertilizer used on agricultural land totalled about 104 100 tonnes of nitrogen and about 12 400 tonnes of phosphorus. These nutrients are an essential basis for increased agricultural production, but if they are lost from the nutrient cycle, they may cause pollution by eutrophication of lakes, rivers and coastal waters.
Jaeren was a land of lakes 100 years ago with high biological diversity, but today these lakes have disappeared.
The big change happened around 1960, the lakes were affected by sewage, fertilizers from agriculture and drainage. The result was a lack of oxygen in the lakes, the plant diversity changed and so did the animal species.
I would like use landscape method reduce the agricultural pollution.
Norway's terrain is long and narrow from north to south. So the coast line is vertical landscape corridor in Norway. I want to add new landscape structure in Jaeren by use water systems.
The new structure is: Horizontal Landscape Corridor.

Agriculture over board!

There are many benefits from kelp cultivation, but it is generally known that monocultures also bring consequences in time, for example lice in fish farming. Therefore I will in this project create an incorporated system of kelp cultivation in small scale, consisting of integrated farming which combines fish farming, mussels and other important contributors in the ocean life cycle. A big scale production off shore, maybe in connection with the soon leftover oil platforms, is also an interesting part of the system.

Kelp as CO2 collector, biofuel material, biotope savers, fertilizer, animal feed and research material, would be an industry that will improve agricultural Jæren in peak oil times to come.

My challenge is to look at the complete system and the consequences it will have on the future Jæren, and how to advance in each part of the system. Distribution, life cycles and suitable locations is first to come...

Today, the dominating crop in Jæren is grass (fresh by animal grasing or fermented and stored). Meanwhile, more other "grass" are disappearing quietly. I think we should return back some "habitat" to nature. If there is a place no body can go into, that would be perfect for the biotope. And I am trying to find and "make" this secret place.

It is important to ensure that biological diversity can continue to evolve. But the agriculture is also important too. Even Jæren is a main region for vegetables, mainly tomatoes and cucumber produced in greenhouses. The planting areas decreased year by year.
How to make good use of the limited resourse to product more food? Vertical farming!

In my mind, not just nature need species diversity, our agriculture also. Uniform variety cropping means lacking of resistance to plant disease.

This two systems seems in opposition. Now I find they have something in common. I am going to combine them. I belive they can "win-win and coexist".

I see it as a potential lighter landscape in Jæren.

He saw the pursuit of lightness as a reaction to the dutifulness of life.

I see ecological farming as a reaction to the high productivity of farming.

He writes about the light and the heavy.

I see Jæren as the dirty and the clean.

He emphasises that he does not intend to exclude or to define as inferior the opposite.

I want to emphasise in Jæren that neither the dirty or the clean is inferior the opposite.

This is a project that represents and focuses on the weak voice of Jæren, the bird life that occur in this region which has a large and important value in the landscape and as part of a biotope. The teeming life that comes and goes or remains for the rest of the birds' lives. Give Jæren a mark on the map to all the millions of birdwatchers found worldwide that have this as an interest.
Observations and records referring to the small footprint that you might not notice with the first. It is a start of a compendium of little things.

Instead of making a storyboard I have been focusing on strategies for my project. The following text describes the four strategies I have chosen. The presentation will be uploaded tomorrow.

CHARGING THE LANDSCAPE WITH NEW ENERGY
Many people we met at the studios rejected the consequences of peak oil. Yet Jæren has to redefine its role. Four strategies are introduced to prepare the region for the changes in the time to come, making a framework where the new Jæren may appear.

1 RECONFIGURATION OF INFRASTRUCTURE
The probability of Jæren finding “the new oil” is slim. In the future a bigger plurality in industry and fields of knowledge will be needed. The infrastructure should not serve one logic - the oil - but be able to serve several, making the region more robust in the transition to new economies.

2 CREATING URBANITY
What will fill the gaps when the Fortune 500 companies of Jæren relocate to new oil fields? Forus will need to implement new qualities and differentiate itself from other generic office areas, having the advantage to attract new companies and new actors.

3 SHAPING NEW SEASCAPES
The boarders of the oil fields will be washed away while others will appear, following new logics - currents, wind, sea depth and quality of the seabed. New lines will be drawn. Others will be more ephemeral, crossing international boarders and interests.

4 CULTIVATION OF THE FUTURE
The knowledge that Jæren holds today will not necessarily be the survival of tomorrow. New know-how should be the goal for the institutions of education, research and knowledge, in order to keep the region in the international spotlight.

This project is rather a process of gathering various voices than a solid design. I would say this is another fun approach I have learnt during this studio. At the very first beginning, I was so deeply confirmed that I would still like to do cultural thing on Jæren. I am not saying my mind has been changed. Instead, a new way of analyzing what kind of structure Jæren has leads me to a more convincing method to do the research. In this midcritic presentation, I am going to reveal my conversation with those interesting people from Jæren and through which I try to explain a sort of ideal image on culture, on landscape in the post fossil oil era.

The border as a new horizon

The stones are one of the main features present on the landscape of Jaeren : they mark the old properties boundary, creating in the agricultural land a rigorous structure. But must say that some ownership has changed, therefore the real limit is not anymore the one showed by stones, and an invisible pattern is hidden beyond this matrix.

Is this the point of departure for a new structure? How can this new feature be integrated with the definition of park? can this element combine public spaces and private spaces? how can this ingredient project Jaeren into a new horizon?

Using as a model 6 different sites, I'll try to test out how trasformations, related to the word of park and consequently to the water, soil,etc, can shape and build a new frame.

In short the boundaries ,nevertheless the term in itself defines a precise space, become a methaphor for broader scenarios ,projected in the park notion.

Jæren and water quality

Aksjon Jærvassdrag ( The Jæren water act ) has a lot of information concerning biodiversity and water quality. Unfortunately it doesn't seem like there is an English page so all information is in Norwegian only.

For those of you concerned with water quality i recommend these reports :

Rapport RF - 2003/060 for good maps about watersheds and water pollution sources.

Rapport IRIS 2009/037 for the latest update on the water quality situation.

It seems like Orre is subject to one of the worst situation concerning nutrient loading from agriculture in the whole of Norway. There are also reports about sitings of bluegreen algae on a large scale - also called Cyanobacteria. Doing some fast research about Cyanobacteria helped me find this interesting article.

Vertical Farming: Potatoes? They're on the Fifth Floor

Vertical farming is a proposed agricultural technique involving large-scale agriculture in urban high-rises or "farmscrapers". Using recycled resources and greenhouse methods such as hydroponics, these buildings would produce fruit, vegetables, edible mushrooms and algae year-round.

But so far it exists only in plans and drawings, and a model at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.

Because building a farmscraper would cost too much, especially considering the price of land in many cities.

It seems crazy to build such a high-rises farm in Jaeren. But the agriculture today is still "two-dimensional", it can be develop to "3D".I mean if we use the vertical space, the production canbe double，even more.

On the other hand, todays’ intensive agriculture is considered to be the main agent responsible for the decline of plant species. Species diversity become more and more important to our environment. Maybe there should be a secret garden for them in Jaeren.

BTW, when I sent e-mail to Landbruks- og matdepartementet asking about the agriculture in Jaeren, they forward the request to the County Governor of Rogaland.

This image from my notebook was used in the discussion with you on storyboards. It is my storyboard for the 10 minutes lecture I gave for 11 departments at the NAL session om Architecture Now, just back from Greenland. As you can see, some of the other lecturers is written into my storyboard giving it new shape and form, they informed my lecture so to speak
It is the only two pages from my notebooks, that has been with me through all the studios we have set up through Jæren and Greenland, that is left in my position.
My computerbag with all technicalities and two completely filled notebooks where stolen from me in Oslo on Friday evening. As you know how much importance and confidence I place in the dialogue, and in the images that these dialogues create, can understand the complete loss I feel after this theft. Even the texts from the last dialogues with you is gone with the wind. But; Alice has made a beatifull poster, positioning this studios in two worlds we have been to and the notions and statements from them as stones in water with rings of knowledge, thouching each other, merging into each other. She has even blocks of texts from the studios. If I could ask for the moon: could each of you post on the blog a comment from one or two of the studios we set up in Jæren and Greenland and give your version of them, just some lines. That would be very good for me, and also for you I hope. A kind of rewriting of your and my learnings. Anything is very welcome - fex Gotfrieds five points from the IRIS studio, and Tarald Omas four columns of wisdom from the Ona Lighthouse studio. The heading "When you hear music its gone in the air" is from the Jazz musician Eric Dolphy. I am eagerly waiting for your small stories - thanks.

Second version of imbedded information

This is my second version of “imbedded information”. The expanding urban areas in Jaeren is also a part of the expanding urban areas in the rest of the world. Agricultural land is under pressure. The urban citizens of Jaeren also affect the rest of the world through their ecological footprint caused by food- production. Is it possible to make a alliance between the expanding urban areas and the lack of energy/ecological solutions?

...i've realized i want too much for one project...is it time to choose or to combine?...

2 possible projects:

- green infrastructures for better life quality in the city
- green infrastructures as a research object in the wet climate

how the public-green infrastructure should be planned and developed in order to keep its function during the seasons? Specially during WET winters, or interchanging seasons... western Norway is one of the wettest regions in Europe – rain being more common than snow in winter.......my country is facing the same problem....so its my old concern...just didn't have any possibilities to dig into it deeply.....[ people lifestyle (outdoor activities, mobility, free time) depend on climate, so morphology of the city is also depended on climate, as human activities are strongly related with the city shape, specially public space system]....wet climate might be very useful for agriculture – out of the city - , but what about IN the city?...

I wanted to focus on this issue some time ago....just needed a motivation or argumentation for: why am I dealing with public spaces in Jaeren region?....then...all the population growth and oil impact on social welfare research started....i needed some specific fact which could lead me to public-green infrastructure...but maybe the fact of wet climate, and also that the climate is warming in general, could be a good reason for research and some solutions?...

This element was shown a few pages of the Wetlands group's activity in Hedmark.This is a very interesting project that shows that it is possible with simple measures to give something back to nature. Asiaq – Greenland Survey

Asiaq operates all over Greenland, undertaking a wide variety of activities concerning the physical, non-living environment.
Asiaq’s responsibilities include; mapping, geographic information, hydrology, climate, environment, and surveying and geotechnical investigation. Their Workshop maintains a network of climate stations distributed all over Greenland for the purpose of local monitoring and international collaboration.

Look also into NunaGIS, which is a digital atlas displaying maps over Greenland. On top of the maps you can display geographical information themes such as bird colonies and sensitive areas, GPS monitored caribous north of Nuuk, hunting districts, historic buildings, territorial boundaries of Greenland and lots of other themes.

Thursday in Nuuk, we will meet Karl Brix Zinglersen and Mätzler Eva from Asiaq. They will among other things talk with us about Asiaq, mapping, WebGIS, geology, geotechnical / geophysical / soil analysis, MapInfo GIS, and Remote Sensing

I have an idea to look at the urbanization of our part of the world in chapters and how this journey north with the diminishing artificial light could be mapped and treated with small temporary inhabitable coastal instuments, strategically placed for the raw experience of coastal walkers following the north star and neighbouring constellations.

IMBEDDED INFORMATION - what to present

Go along using the approach presented at the workshop and using it as a driver for developing your ‘plots’/projects. Be clear on what is your field of interest, and name it with specific words. Name the players, and their relationships, show their battlefields.
As a guideline, first we want you to introduce in each of your briefs one quote from each of the studios we had in Jæren (IRIS - Hall Toll - Erga farm - Obrestad Fyr - KinoKino). In what ways these statements have informed your project?

Second, present your players: name them being as specific as possible, and write some lines stating who they are and what they do.

Then, draw 2/3 diagrams representing your "informers"/"players" and their mutual relationship: on an abstract level (relations in action) and on the map (relations in space). For inspiration, have a look at the website visualcomplexity.com: you should try not to use "static"representations, like hyerarchies, arboresent structures.. - but try to see dyanmics interactions, where each "player" has multiple and multidirectional relationships to the others. Make smart use of maps as well, locating relationships between the players, but feel free to choose your own scale, and abstract from the map the physical elements that interest you (eg. one location can be as big as the all north sea, or can be an abstract condition found in many places in Jæeren - like the littoral zone - or if it is a infrastructural element, like the trainline, it can be taken out from its real course, and become an abstract line connecting and structuring things..).

The illustrations produced in this phase should be an answer to the question what informs your project? in order to soon dive into the following and more tricky question what is your project?

As a conclusion, new visions are already allowed : what new ideas, new spaces, new programs can you imagine? But be aware that they have to be consequent with your research and brief, that is to say: brilliant ideas can't stand for themselves.
